Why age-appropriateness in children’s Dancesport should be understood not only as a matter of presentation, but as a wider question of welfare, development, training culture and the foundations we ask young dancers to build from.

When dance education becomes content, it carries more than information. It shapes how dancers learn, what they copy, and what they begin to believe technique, progress, and success should look like. That is why context matters. Not every correction belongs online. Not every body should be used to demonstrate an idea without explanation. And not every dancer watching will have the experience to understand what is suitable for them.

What we reward, especially in childhood has lasting impact. Because children aren’t just learning to dance. They’re absorbing values about performance, identity, and worth and often before they have the words to question them.

When children are present in mixed-age dance camps, certain developmental considerations ought to be clearly visible: teaching language suited to their stage of development, awareness of what their bodies can reasonably manage, performance expectations that are emotionally appropriate, and safeguarding structures that are both visible and credible. In some settings, those distinctions are not immediately clear.

We live in a time when talented young dancers can be seen far and wide with just one post, reel, or livestream. And in many ways, that’s something to celebrate. Visibility can bring connection, recognition, opportunity. But it can also bring something else - something we may not fully realise until we stop and ask: Who is this visibility for? And what is the cost?
